The King's Gambit
1.e2-e4 e7-e5 2.f4The King’s Gambit is an opening variation which belongs to the open games. Very sharply, on move two White sacrifices a pawn. It is one of the popular openings of the Romantic period in chess in the 19th century, when attacking play was prized above all else. Today the King’s Gambit is considered double-edged and easy to defend against with Black. For that reason it is very seldom seen in top tournaments.
The idea behind this gambit is line opening for White and a full centre. White is hoping for an attack down the open f-file against f7. The positional problems with the King’s Gambit lie in the fact that the white king’s position is insecure and the advanced black pawn on f4 is uncomfortable for White.
