12 Winning a pawn ending

12.1 Tutorial

The ending of king and pawn against king is of great practical significance. If during a game you have won a pawn and then liquidated all the other pieces these are the pieces which are left on the board: 


If you understand how to win this endgame you have a simple winning plan for games of chess: 

  • win material, at least a pawn.
  • swap off everything (liquidate).
  • promote the extra pawn as shown here.
  • mate with a lone queen

The next example starts earlier - here the pawn is still on the startng square. The king is in front of its pawn; only then as a rule does it win the struggle for control of the queening square.

12.2 Exercises

Move directly on the board to input a solution. Either click first on the start square and then on the target square. Or click on the piece, hold on to it, move it tot he target square and let go of it. The button ‘Left arrow’ takes back the move.
