8 Diversion
8.1 Tutorial
In diversion a piece is fulfilling an important defensive task. It is protecting a square or a valuable piece. As a rule, the attacking side entices that piece away from its post by means of a sacrifice so that it can no longer parry the other threat. The tactic is closely related to overloading. The difference lies in the sacrifice. A sacrifice is required for diversion, not for overloading.
8.2 Exercises
Move directly on the board to input a solution. Either click first on the start square and then on the target square. Or click on the piece, hold on to it, move it tot he target square and let go of it. The button ‘Left arrow’ takes back the move.

In diversion a piece is diverted from an important defensive task. If this defence is against a threat of mate, the diversion can be achieved after major sacrifices.
